Conrad Schools of Science Holds Biotechnology Fair
The Conrad Schools of Science held their first annual Biotechnology Fair on November 17th, 18th and 19th. Supported by the Delaware Valley Innovation Network (DVIN), the fair created an opportunity for students in the biotechnology program to demonstrate the skills they have learned and interact with industry experts, community members, family and friends.
Student led presentations and mini lessons on techniques and procedures focused on real-world applications. Stations included topics such as DNA Extraction, Forensic DNA Fingerprinting, Gene Sequencing, Chromosome Variations, Bacterial Transformation, other DNA processes and safety and lab procedures. Mike Bowman, Chairman and President of Delaware Technology Park discussed scientific procedures with students while Lt. Governor Matt Denn watched a student demonstration of DNA Extraction. Other industry experts attending the fair included Bob Dayton President of the Delaware BioScience Association and Andrew Cottone, Vice President of Chemistry, Adesis, Inc.
The Biotechnology II students enthusiastically shared their expertise about their field of study and encouraged visitors to take part in activities. Both students and staff viewed the fair as a learning experience and a chance to obtain feedback not only about the fair but about the type of learning that is applicable to today’s biotechnology industry. Principal Mark Pruitt commented, “The technology industry has grown and changed so quickly over the past few years that having industry support with program development has been very beneficial.”
The first annual Biotechnology Fair, coordinated by biotechnology teacher Derek Wiberg and department chair Anne-Marie Hanapole provided Conrad biotechnology students with a practical, social and academic school experience and provided an opportunity for industry leaders, staff and community members to see classroom activities first hand. Conrad students and staff, through their connection with industry leaders will have the information they need to create relevant learning opportunities and become highly qualified future employees in the bioscience industry.
