Strategic Plan
An emphasis on effective teaching, the determination to have all children reading by the end of third grade and increased parent involvement are some of the district goals and future directions included in a four-year Strategic Plan approved unanimously July 11, 2012 by the Red Clay Board of Education.
More than two years in the making, approval of the plan came after a final draft was presented publically at a June school board workshop and the plan was made available for public review and comment on a newly-created section of the district’s website.
An online survey asked whether the plan was clear, meaningful and relevant to stakeholders and how they would prefer to be kept informed on district progress toward the five goals contained within the plan. The Strategic Plan also includes a tracking system to carefully monitor implementation of the goals and report progress regularly to the school board, community, and public.
The Strategic Plan website will continue to be built and expanded over the summer, as Red Clay looks to full implementation of the plan beginning in the 2012-2013 school year.
“We intend to hit the ground running in the fall,” said Superintendent Merv Daugherty. “We believe this plan provides a clear direction to all Red Clay staff and will serve as the framework for all educational, staffing and financial decisions. We are confident that reaching the five specific goals, in conjunction, will allow us to realize our vision of improved academic achievement by all students.”
Based upon district data and the latest and most respected educational research, Red Clay concludes in the plan that increased student success can best be achieved through a commitment to five strategic goals:
- Goal 1: Every classroom will have a highly effective educator led by highly effective administrators.
- Goal 2: All students will read at or above grade level by the end of third grade.
- Goal 3: Schools will continue to close the achievement gap for all students, with a particular focus on our English Language Learners and students with disabilities.
- Goal 4: All students will graduate college- and career-ready.
- Goal 5: Parents and the community will be engaged in the education of students.
Development of the Strategic Plan was accomplished, in part, by teams of Red Clay staff and community members who conducted research into student success and how specific goals included in plan could be reached. Each work group developed a set of recommendations that became part of the Strategic Plan.
Preliminary drafts of the Strategic Plan were presented at public meetings and workshop sessions. Small focus groups were held with key stakeholders in the district, such as teachers, Board of Education members, community members and district leadership.
Groups received updates on the plan’s development and feedback was sought through the district website and at public meetings. As the plan is put into practice over the next four years, the district will continue to seek feedback through surveys on the website.
