Message from the Superintendent
July 19, 2012
To the Red Clay Community;
The Delaware Department of Education (DOE) recently released the 2012 Delaware Comprehensive Assessment System (DCAS) results. We are pleased by the performance of our students and schools in the 2011-2012 school year.
The numbers of students reaching proficiency levels increased in all grade levels, in both reading and math (see chart below) Roughly two-thirds of our students increased at least one performance level from the fall 2011 test to the spring 2012 test in math and half of our students showed the same rate of growth in reading. Of 47 growth targets outlined by DOE, Red Clay met 44 of them.
We are extremely grateful to the Red Clay school board members, teachers, principals, support staff, parents and community members for their hard work and support to assist schools in reaching successful academic goals. Congratulations to the Red Clay students who worked very hard in the classroom and made outstanding academic growth.
Listed below are the grade level district data points in two areas: 1) Average Student Proficiency Growth from 2011 to 2012 and the Average Student Instructional Scale Score Growth during the 2011-2012 school year.
While there is much to celebrate about these recent test results, Red Clay recognizes that we still have work to be done. In order to reach our vision that all Red Clay students show academic improvement, the district has started to implement a new, four-year strategic plan to address five key areas to improve academic achievement throughout the school district. This plan was developed after careful review of achievement data and research-based strategies to help students succeed.
We will continue to review our data to pinpoint areas that can be improved. You can expect more information soon from the state. Individual school ratings will be released by DOE in early August. We are confident that Red Clay’s Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) data will be encouraging and will confirm our continued progress. Individual student scores will soon be mailed to homes by DOE.
Red Clay will provide updated information through our district website and the Red Clay Record, scheduled for publication in August, as well as through the district's annual report.
Respectfully,
Mervin B. Daugherty, Ed.D.
